The Lagos State Government has announced plans to expand its fiber duct infrastructure to 5,000 kilometers, a strategic move aimed at solidifying the state’s digital backbone and fostering a smarter urban environment.

The State’s Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, disclosed the ambitious target during a recent ministerial briefing.

Speaking, Alake revealed that the state has already successfully completed 3,000 kilometers of fiber ducting, covering high-density areas such as Alimosho, Ikorodu, and Ibeju-Lekki.

The next phase of expansion to 5,000 kilometers will be executed through a collaborative model involving active private sector participation.

Alake emphasized that this infrastructure is vital to supporting the state’s growing digital ecosystem. Technology-driven analytics currently employed by the government show that Lagos State online platforms receive an average of 250,000 monthly visits.

By expanding high-speed connectivity, the government aims to enhance how residents interact with digital services and optimize real-time engagement.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the Commissioner highlighted the annual Art and Technology Lagos conference as a key pillar of the state’s innovation strategy. Organized by the Eko Innovation Centre in partnership with the state, the event serves as a platform for technology stakeholders, policymakers, and tech talent to collaborate on solutions for a smarter Lagos.

Alake also positioned Lagos as the national leader in digital governance and privacy. Under the state’s Data Protection Compliance Project, 109 data protection officers have been appointed to ensure that the state remains the most data-compliant government in Nigeria.
