Lagos Blue line adds more trips as passenger demand rises

9 Jun 2026

‎The Lagos State Government has expanded operations on the Blue Line Rail corridor, increasing daily train trips and introducing earlier departure times in response to growing passenger traffic on the service.

‎The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) stated that from June 15, 2026, the number of daily trips on the Blue Line will increase from 90 to 94, while weekday and Saturday services will commence at 6:00am, 30 minutes earlier than the current schedule.

According to LAMATA, the Blue Line has transported more than 6 million passengers since passenger operations commenced in September 2023 with the new development coming nearly 3 years after commercial operations began on the rail line.

‎The agency said the revised timetable is intended to reduce waiting times, improve passenger movement and accommodate increasing demand on the rail corridor saying under the new arrangement, trains will begin operations earlier from Monday to Saturday to enable commuters beat peak hour road traffic, while closing time remains 9:30 pm.

‎Sunday services have also been expanded, with trips increasing from 22 to 24 with trains continuing to operate at 30 minute intervals throughout the day stressing the growing importance of rail transport in Lagos, where authorities have continued to promote mass transit as a solution to continuous traffic jam.

‎Since its launch, the Blue Line has emerged as an alternative option to road travel along the Marina-Mile 2 corridor and reducing travel time for thousands of commuters daily.

‎The additional trips are expected to improve service reliability and ease congestion at stations, particularly during peak periods, as more Lagos residents turn to rail transport amid increasing pressure on the road.
