Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has declared that his administration as governor left over N75bn in the state government’s coffers.
Responding to claims by the Soludo-led state administration alleging that his government left behind a trail of inherited liabilities, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, unpaid contractor bills, and outstanding worker entitlements, Obi rejected the allegations as entirely false.
According to the former governor, his administration systematically cleared historical arrears, including over ₦35 billion worth of long-standing gratuities and pensions dating back years.
He maintained that by the time he handed over power, the state had zero backlog in salaries, pensions, or gratuities, alongside a clean slate with contractors for all duly executed and certified projects.
Addressing the contentious ₦2 billion ecological fund frequently referenced as an inherited loan or mismanaged resource, Obi clarified that the money was disbursed approximately three months before his tenure ended, specifically to combat the severe Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis.
Despite intense pressure to deploy the funds immediately, he alleged that he resisted utilization, reasoning that governance is a continuous process and the money belonged to a designated project meant for his successor.
Obi further revealed that the fund was left 100 percent intact in a First Bank account (Account No. 2018779464), which accrued interest to yield a balance of over ₦2.13 billion.
He emphasized that this sum was separate from the general savings pool of over ₦75 billion left behind by his administration, as project-specific funds were deliberately isolated.
Putting his political credibility on the line, Obi issued a bold challenge to his critics, declaring that he would immediately halt his political campaigning if anyone could establish evidence contradicting his financial records.
