The youth and vigilante leader of Ovbiogie Community in Benin City, Edo State, Mr Odion Okoro, has allegedly led a group of armed men to the residence of Mr Charles Oboh following reports that Oboh had returned to, or was staying within, the community.
The alleged incident occurred on September 14, 2026, when Okoro and the men reportedly arrived at Oboh’s residence and searched the property.
Residents who spoke about the incident alleged that furniture and other personal belongings were damaged during the search. The reported circumstances have prompted concerns over the manner in which the search was conducted and the authority under which the group allegedly entered the premises.
Oboh was reportedly expelled from the community on July 5 following allegations concerning his sexual orientation. According to accounts from some community members, the allegations were considered contrary to the customs and traditions observed by sections of the community.
An eyewitness, identified as Mr Monday Edobor, reportedly said Oboh had not been seen in the community for a considerable period before the latest incident.
Edobor further claimed that he had heard reports that the police were also searching for Oboh in connection with allegations relating to his sexual orientation.
The reported development has heightened concerns about Oboh’s safety and the treatment of individuals accused of being bisexual or perceived to belong to a sexual minority.
The incident has also drawn attention to questions surrounding the conduct of community security groups, particularly their involvement in searches of private residences and alleged damage to residents’ property.
