Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim elected as Chair of UN budget committee

In a major diplomatic victory for Nigeria, the nation’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim has been elected Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration, famously known as the Fifth Committee.
The historic election, which took place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, places the Nigerian envoy at the helm of one of the UN General Assembly’s most critical bodies responsible for the administrative and budgetary matters of the entire global organization.
In his acceptance speech, Ambassador Ibrahim expressed deep gratitude to the international community and his home country.
Acknowledging the weight of the role amid current global complexities, he pledged to bring decisive leadership to the committee.
“I assured my colleagues of 193 member states that at this challenging time in history, it is my responsibility to provide strategy in a chaotic situation,” Ibrahim stated.
The newly elected Chairman also extended his profound appreciation to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu crediting the President’s governance philosophies as a blueprint for his upcoming task. Ibrahim promised to implement these reform principles directly within the UN’s administrative framework.
“Mr. President, as your student in the reforms class, be assured that those teaching slides will reflect in the Budget, Appropriations, and Human Resources of the United Nations,” Ibrahim remarked, while also thanking the citizens of Nigeria for supporting this historic achievement.
Ambassador Ibrahim, an academic and former Senator representing Ondo South, assumed his role as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative just months ago, in April 2026. Holding advanced degrees from elite institutions including Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge, his formidable background has reportedly drawn significant attention and respect within the UN diplomatic corps since his arrival in New York.
As Chairman of the Fifth Committee, Ibrahim will now steer vital multilateral negotiations over the UN’s multi-billion dollar budget, oversight allocation, and human resource management during a period of heightened international tension.
