Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has called on residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome President Bola Tinubu ahead of his scheduled state visit on April 10.
Diri made the appeal during an Easter Sunday service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.
He described the presidential visit as significant, noting that it presents an opportunity for the people of Bayelsa to showcase their hospitality and unity.
“I call on all Bayelsans to come out en masse to welcome Mr. President and accord him the hospitality that we are known for. It is part of our culture as Ijaw people to warmly receive our guests,” he said.
The governor noted that key projects slated for inauguration during the one-day visit are central to the state’s economic growth and development.
He highlighted the 60-megawatt gas turbine project as a major intervention to improve electricity supply, describing power as a critical driver of economic growth.
“Power is a major driver of economic growth, and this project is key to our development agenda,” he said.
Diri also underscored the importance of the 630-metre Angiama-Oporoma bridge, describing it as a historic milestone for the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
“For over 60 years, our people in Southern Ijaw have had no road access to Yenagoa. This bridge changes that reality. These are legacy projects that will positively impact our people and open up Bayelsa for greater opportunities,” he added.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustained infrastructure development to attract investment, boost tourism, and enhance economic opportunities in the state.
He also called for continued unity and peaceful coexistence, describing these as defining values of the Ijaw people.
Speaking on the Easter celebration, Diri urged Christians to reflect on the message of love and sacrifice exemplified by Jesus Christ.
“The lesson of the death and resurrection of Christ is that of love. We must love one another, stay united, and avoid actions that contradict what we celebrate today,” he said.
Dignitaries at the service included the wife of the governor, Dr. Gloria Diri; Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo; Head of Service, Dr. Wisdom Sawyer; and other top government officials.
