Adeleke’s visit to Baba Akande: A new chapter in Osun politics?

On 4 March 2025, the Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, paid a courtesy visit to Chief Bisi Akande, a former governor of Osun and the interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at his residence in Ibadan.

According to the Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the two leaders held a closed-door meeting lasting two hours, sparking widespread discussions about the implications of the visit, particularly against the backdrop of the ongoing political crisis in Osun State.

The state has been embroiled in controversy following a Court of Appeal ruling, which was interpreted in some quarters as reinstating local government chairpersons and councillors who were elected towards the end of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s administration. This decision has led to a struggle for control at the local government level, with both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC asserting their claims to leadership.

Despite concerns raised by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, regarding potential security risks, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) proceeded with local government elections on 22 February. The results saw PDP candidates winning across all contested positions, further intensifying the political tension in the state.

In response to the crisis, Governor Adeleke has launched a statewide consultation with key stakeholders. As part of this initiative, he has been meeting with prominent figures to discuss the government’s stance on the legal disputes surrounding local government leadership. His visit to Chief Akande is viewed as part of this broader effort to seek political dialogue and stability. The governor has also planned a special briefing session with the State Council of Traditional Rulers on Thursday.

During his visit, Adeleke reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law and urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions. He emphasised the importance of resolving the crisis through legal and institutional channels, rather than resorting to confrontational tactics that could lead to further instability.

However, his visit has not been without controversy. Some APC members in Osun have criticised the move, describing it as a “political pilgrimage” and suggesting that no amount of negotiation could persuade Chief Akande to act against the interests of his party. Speculation has also emerged regarding the possibility of Governor Adeleke switching allegiance to the APC, though no official statements have confirmed such intentions.

Nonetheless, in the interest of peace and political stability, any efforts aimed at resolving the crisis through dialogue and consultation should be welcomed. The ongoing tensions have already led to unfortunate loss of lives and destruction of property, underscoring the need for a peaceful resolution. If the governor’s approach can help restore order and foster unity, then it represents a step in the right direction for Osun State.
