Absence of witness stalls N33.8bn fraud trial of Former Power Minister

The high-profile trial of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, encountered a procedural setback at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday after the defense team failed to present its opening witness.

The proceedings, presided over by Justice James Omotosho in Maitama, were expected to mark the commencement of the defendant's case.

However, lead defense counsel Mr. Femi Atteh, SAN, informed the court that efforts to serve a subpoena on the intended witness had proved unsuccessful, as the individual was not found at their office.

Consequently, the defense requested an extension of time to ensure the witness's attendance at the next sitting.

Mamman is currently facing a 12-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The allegations involve a massive conspiracy to commit money laundering totaling N33,804,830,503.73, making it one of the most significant financial infraction cases involving a former public official in recent years.

Following the defense's application for more time, Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to February 26, 2026, for the defendant to formally open his defense.
