LASBCA issues two-week ultimatum to occupants of distressed buildings

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has identified over fifteen distressed buildings in Iponri Estate, Surulere, that are scheduled for demolition due to their unsafe conditions.

This announcement was made by the General Manager of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, who explained that the agency has issued several notices and warnings to the affected residents, urging them to vacate the area to prevent potential loss of lives and property.

Oki emphasised that the decision to ask residents to leave these distressed buildings is in the public’s best interest. He expressed concern that the deteriorating condition of some of these structures poses a significant danger, as their integrity has been compromised and they could collapse at any moment.

To avert any possible disaster often associated with building collapses, Oki noted the necessity for the State Government to act swiftly to ensure public safety.

The LASBCA boss reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing building safety standards across Lagos State. He urged residents to comply with evacuation orders to avoid any casualties and further emphasised that the agency will continue to monitor buildings throughout the state to identify other structures that may pose similar risks, thereby preventing potential dangers.

During discussions about the risks these distressed buildings pose to the livelihood of residents, Honourable Desmond Elliot, a member of the House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency 1, and Barrister Barakat Bakare, the Special Adviser on Housing to Governor Sanwo-Olu, implored residents not to compromise safety standards. They stressed the importance of adhering to building codes and regulations.

Honourable Elliot applauded LASBCA for its dedication to maintaining order and safety in the built environment. He also reinforced the need for residents to vacate the area to safeguard their lives and properties, highlighting that the agency’s efforts are crucial for the overall well-being of the community.
