5 African teams that almost rewrote World Cup history

By Osordi Ayomide
Since the very first World Cup, African nations have chased the ultimate dream of bringing the trophy home. While we are yet to see an African champion, nations like Cameroon, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, and Morocco have come agonizingly close, delivering moments that shook the world!
Here are 5 times African giants nearly broke the internet and the history books:

1. Morocco (The history makers)
While Egypt was actually the first African team to play in a World Cup (1934), Morocco holds the crown for the greatest run in history! In 2022, the Atlas Lions stunned the globe, conceding only one goal (an own goal) on their way to the Semifinals. They knocked out Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in the Quarterfinals to become the first-ever African nation to reach the final four. Though France stopped them, they earned the world's respect forever.

2. Ghana (The heartbreak of 2010)
Who can forget the 2010 World Cup in South Africa? The Black Stars carried the hopes of the entire continent. After defeating the USA in the Round of 16, they were literally seconds away from the Semifinals against Uruguay. Then came the infamous Luis Suárez handball, a missed penalty, and a shootout heartbreak. It remains one of the most painful "what if" moments in football history.

3. Nigeria (The dream debut)
In 1994, the Super Eagles arrived in the USA and immediately announced themselves as a global powerhouse. In a group with Argentina, Bulgaria, and Greece, they shockingly topped the table! Though they exited in the Round of 16 against Italy, that squad (featuring Okocha, Amokachi, Yekini) is legendary. To date, Nigeria remains the only African nation to reach the knockout stages three times (1994, 1998, 2014).

4. Cameroon (The trailblazers)
The Indomitable Lions changed everything in 1990. In the opening match, they shocked the world by defeating defending champions Argentina (led by Diego Maradona)! They didn't stop there, they marched on to become the first African team to reach the Quarterfinals, eventually losing a narrow thriller to England. They paved the way for everyone else.

5. Senegal (The giant killers)
On their World Cup debut in 2002, Senegal did the unthinkable: they defeated current World Champions France in the opening game!

They danced their way through to the Quarterfinals, beating Sweden with a golden goal before finally falling to Turkey. It was a magical run that proved African teams fear no one.
