Key political figures and leaders of major political parties assembled in Abuja on Tuesday to sign the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The signing ceremony, organized by the National Peace Committee under the leadership of former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), took place at the International Conference Centre.
The initiative aims to lower political tensions and ensure peaceful conduct across party lines as the nation prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented President Bola Tinubu at the event, alongside the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC) were present to sign the document in person.
Other participating platforms included the Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Youth Party (YP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Democratic Leadership Alliance, National Democratic Party, and the National Rescue Movement.
Speaking at the event, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi emphasized the need for issue-based campaigning and decorum among political actors.
He also expressed regret over lives lost during recent electoral processes, urging stakeholders to ensure that no Nigerian loses their life over an election.
In his remarks, Omoyele Sowore expressed skepticism regarding the efficacy of the accord without strong enforcement mechanisms.
He advocated for a binding framework that imposes concrete sanctions on candidates or parties that breach peace commitments
