2025 WASSCE English paper not cancelled, Says WAEC amid leak fallout

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has debunked claims that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper has been cancelled, amid mounting backlash over examination leaks and logistical failures.
A widely circulated fake press release, dated May 30, 2025, falsely claimed that the May 28 English Language paper had been invalidated and would be rescheduled.
The misinformation, which spread rapidly on social media, prompted confusion and anxiety among students, parents, and schools.
In a swift response on Tuesday, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, issued an official statement discrediting the document and reaffirming the validity of the exam.
The statement partly reads, “The management of the West African Examinations Council would like to state that the press release being circulated did not emanate from the council. The said examination has not been cancelled.
“The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute, to cause confusion and panic for candidates who sat the examination.
WAEC also warned the public to disregard unverified information not released via its official communication channels.
Reports from candidates and school officials confirmed that the May 28 English exam was conducted well into the night—several hours later than scheduled. The irregular timing added to fears of a cancellation and fueled rumours online.
WAEC has attributed the delay to heightened security and anti-malpractice measures taken in response to concerns about the integrity of exam papers.
Some sources who pleaded anonymity revealed that the English Language paper was allegedly leaked to the public four days before the exam date.
Preliminary findings suggest that some WAEC officials may have been involved in the leak, prompting internal investigations.
While WAEC has not publicly confirmed the leak or identified suspects, the council acknowledged intensified efforts to prevent further compromise of its examinations.
WAEC has reiterated that all genuine press releases are disseminated through its verified media platforms and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
“Once again, we thank all stakeholders for the confidence reposed in us… and we promise to always seek innovative ways to render quality services to the Nigerian child,” the council stated.
Despite the controversy, WAEC has maintained that the 2025 WASSCE English Language paper remains valid, and no resit is being planned.
Candidates are advised to await official updates only from WAEC-authorised sources.
