2023: I have what it takes to defeat APC, make Nigeria better — Wike

By Seth Akande

Rivers State Governor and presidential aspirant, Nyesom Wike, says he has what it takes to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential election.

This is even as he added that he has a lot to offer Nigerians, particularly the capacity to make the country a better place, if elected as the president.

Recall that Wike, on Sunday, declared his intention to contest in the 2023 presidential election in Makurdi, Benue State, after a meeting with stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He had stated that his priority would be to tackle insecurity in the country and engender the rule of law.

Wike, speaking during a Channels TV programme “Politics Today,” said the country is in a state that needs intervention and this has summoned the need for him and his party to take steps to rescue Nigeria.

He said Nigerians have now seen the need for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to come back into power as things have become unbearable in the country.

According to him, he possesses the characteristics required to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) party and also make Nigeria a better country.

“I want to offer myself to the people of this country to solve problems, because I do know as a man of good love and commitment for the development of this country. You cannot be standing and see your conscience lying, then you sit down to say there is nothing that can be done. As governor of rivers state I support this(making Nigeria better) and I was able to succeed two times.”

Wike noted that the current administration has not been able to perform justice in tackling the issues of insecurity, education, infrastructure and poverty bedevilling the country.

He mentioned that accountability is necessary for a country like Nigeria to run successfully as it is the only way development could occur in the country.

On the issue of zoning, the Governor stated that zoning was an integral part of his party as it would give balance and equity to different parts in the country.

“It is very clear in the constitution for me. I am not running because I want it to be zoned to the south. In terms of performance and capacity, I have it. Who can face APC in the federation? I do think I have that.

“The party’s constitution states that there should rotation of party offices and elective offices. The founding father of this party know the complexity and capacity the country and for equity, fairness for justice this should be done.”

Wike mentioned that he supports the zoning of the presidency to the south, but regardless of where the party eventually zones the position, he would accept the decision of the party as he is a loyal party man.

“I am a very sincere person. There is nothing that can make me violent on simple agreement because of power, whether written or unwritten. If the party says it is zoning it to the North, no problem. I will not run. I will obey the party, but what I will not agree on is for people to say that there should not be zoning.”
