…to combat scarcity, diseases
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Sunday inaugurated the Azare mega water works in Hawul Local Government Area of southern Borno to tackle persistent water scarcity in Azare town and its surroundings.
The mega water works is part of the administration’s goal of ensuring access to clean water for the people of Hawul Local Government and reducing the prevalence of water-borne diseases in the region.
This initiative is part of the comprehensive plan by the Zulum administration to address the problem of water challenge across the state, with Azare Water Works being one of the eight major projects undertaken.
While projects in Ngarannam, Moramti, Pulka, Chibok, and Azare have been completed, those in Madinatu, Shokwari, Jere, and Musari are still in progress.
The Azare project boasts a substantial capacity, including a 565,000-litre reservoir, a 400,000-litre corrugated surface tank atop a reinforced concrete base, and an additional 165,000-litre corrugated overhead tank supported by a 12-meter steel stanchion.
It is powered by 22,000kv solar energy and features 10Hp booster pumps, along with a 5km distribution reticulation network equipped with various tap points.
Furthermore, the facility comprises clusters of solar-powered boreholes, exceeding six in number, reaching depths of up to 100 meters, collectively discharging more than 10 liters per second.
During the commissioning ceremony, Governor Zulum emphasized the significance of the project for the community’s well-being, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve humanity through this vital infrastructure.
The Commissioner of Water Resources, Engr Tijjani Goni Alkali, highlighted the Zulum administration’s extensive efforts in water resource development, citing the construction of numerous basements and hybrid boreholes, alongside the rehabilitation of hand pump boreholes in Hawul Local Government Area.
