Yuletide: NIWA Lagos clears Omu creek, Ikorodu water channels of water hyacinth

In preparation for the expected increase in boat traffic during the yuletide season, the Lagos office of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a large-scale clearance of water hyacinth from key Lagos water channels to improve transportation and ensure the safety of waterway users.

The ongoing project is focused on clearing critical water channels with high boat traffic, beginning with the Omu Creeks and Ikorodu water channels. The clearance work on Omu Creeks has already been completed, while the Ikorodu channels are expected to take at least a week of intensive work, including the removal and disposal of waste and troublesome seaweed.

The Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, Engineer Sarat Braimah, explained that the clearance initiative is part of the agency’s core mandate to ensure smooth and safe sailing for boat operators and other stakeholders. This proactive effort is particularly crucial ahead of the holiday season when water traffic is expected to peak.

“We are taking the necessary steps as we approach the Christmas holiday season, when boat transport activities are expected to rise,” Braimah said.

“The yuletide season also coincides with the resurgence of water hyacinth in our waterways. While these weeds can quickly grow back, we are committed to clearing them proactively to maintain safe passage for boats, both during and after the festive period.”

The clearance effort will also extend to the Badagry and Apapa water channels, with particular focus on Ikorodu, which remains the most critical area. This location serves as the starting point for the spread of water hyacinth to other parts of Lagos’ littoral communities.

“We are working around the clock to ensure the sustainability of this effort throughout the period, with the deployment of our River Marshals to monitor boating activities and ensure compliance with safety protocols,” Braimah added.

Acknowledging the demanding nature of the project, she emphasised that the effort is both costly and resource-intensive, but NIWA is fully committed to its completion.

“Our staff are on the ground daily, and we are determined to deliver the necessary results to keep the waterways safe and accessible for all users during this busy period.”

With the festive season approaching, this proactive clearance initiative is a crucial step in ensuring that Lagos’ waterways remain safe, efficient, and navigable for the expected increase in boat transport activities.
