Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured residents that the taxes they pay will be judiciously used for productive ventures.
Speaking at the commissioning of the second phase of upgraded roads in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to utilizing public funds for infrastructural projects that will enhance residents’ lives and boost Lagos’ global competitiveness.
In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of transportation infrastructure to the success of any economy, describing it as the backbone of socio-economic development.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by traffic congestion and flooding, which have historically hindered the city’s productivity.
“Transportation infrastructure is the backbone of any thriving economy. In Lagos State, we recognise that every aspect of our social and economic life depends on an efficient, reliable, and sustainable transportation network,” Sanwo-Olu remarked.
The Governor’s administration has prioritized road rehabilitation and expansion, focusing on improving access within Lagos’ five divisions and enhancing connectivity across the city.
The latest phase of road upgrades, spanning 5.90 kilometers in Ikoyi, aims to address congestion, reduce travel times, and revitalize the area, known for its economic significance.
“In launching the Ikoyi Urban Regeneration Initiative, we sought to tackle flooding, streamline traffic flow, and upgrade critical road networks, turning Ikoyi into a model district that will not only elevate the quality of life for its residents but also bolster the city’s economic prosperity,” Sanwo-Olu explained.
He also called on residents to take responsibility for the new infrastructure by avoiding practices like indiscriminate waste dumping and illegal parking, which could undermine the roads’ durability and efficiency.
Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, highlighted the significance of the upgraded roads in decongesting traffic in Ikoyi and improving access to residential, commercial, and government zones.
Daramola reassured the public that the roads met the highest international standards, ensuring both safety and durability.
