Yobe: Police arrest 11 over #EndBadGovernance protests
In a bid to quell the growing #EndBadGovernance protests, the Nigerian police have launched a clampdown on protesters in Yobe State, arresting at least 11 youths from their homes in Damaturu, Potiskum, and Gashua.
The arrests, which occurred on Saturday morning, targeted individuals who were vocal and active in the ongoing nationwide protests.
A source close to the situation revealed that the detained individuals, particularly the 11 youths from Gashua, were taken to the state police CID in Damaturu.
“A number of youths were also arrested in Damaturu and Potiskum in what appears to be an attempt to punish those who were outspoken about the ongoing economic hardship,” the source stated.
The arrests have been widely condemned by human rights groups and civil society organisations, who argue that the police action is an infringement on the rights of citizens to peaceful protest.
The #EndBadGovernance protests have been ongoing for several days, with demonstrators demanding an end to economic hardship and good governance.
The police action in Yobe State is the latest in a series of crackdowns on protesters across the country.
In Abuja, protesters were arrested and brutalised by the police, while in Imo State, residents decried the deployment of police surveillance aircraft to monitor protesters.
The NBA has also condemned the looting, vandalisation, and destruction of infrastructure in Jigawa State.
