World Red Cross Day: Kaduna Red Cross marks 162 years

The Nigerian Red Cross Society on Thursday said it would expand its
community-based health programmes to reach additional 50 communities.

The Kaduna State branch Chairman of the society, Jubril Abdullahi, disclosed this
during a news conference to mark World Red Cross Day and 162 anniversary of the movement in Kaduna.

According to him, Red Cross has stood firmly on the side of humanity during conflicts, disasters, health emergencies and in communities facing vulnerability for 162 years.

Abdullahi said the branch has come up with several initiatives for the coming year, which include enhancement of disaster preparedness and response capabilities.

He added that “the branch hopes to strengthen youth engagement programmes to nurture the next generation of humanitarian leaders.

“This year’s theme of the day — On the Side of Humanity — profoundly reflects our unwavering commitment to alleviating human suffering wherever it may be found.

“For 162 years, Red Cross has stood firmly on the side of humanity during conflicts, disasters, health emergencies and in communities facing various vulnerabilities.”

The chairman explained that the Kaduna State branch strengthened disaster response capacity by providing immediate relief to communities affected by floods, fire outbreaks and communal conflicts.

He added that the health programmes reached grassroots with preventive education, first aid training and support for vulnerable populations.

He said “our volunteers, who are the heart and soul of our organisation, have tirelessly worked in rural and urban communities, embodying the spirit of humanity through their selfless service.

“As we commemorate this important day, we must acknowledge the increasing humanitarian challenges we face.

“Climate change has intensified natural disaster, security concerns have created new vulnerabilities and health challenges continue to test our resilience as a state and nation.”
