World Education Day: LASUED VC calls for excellence among lecturers, students

In commemoration of the international education day, the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Ijanikin/Epe, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye,  has called for excellence among lecturers and students of the institution, in order to promote the education system.

Lafiaji-Okuneye made the call at the awareness walk to celebrate 2024 Annual World Education Day, organised by the institution on Wednesday, in Lagos.

The theme of the World Education Day is “Learning For Lasting Peace.”

She said that the university of education should be seen as a role model, which translates to excellence in any form of the education system.

“We cannot be training teachers to be and be seen practising or behaving anti-education, especially in our conduct, dressing, manner of behavior and so on.

“Teaching profession is a noble profession, that  is why we will continue to produce outstanding globally acceptable educational and related disciplines and professionals to our students.

“Part of our mandate is to train teachers and ensure that anyone that passes through this institution must be able to impart knowledge,” Lafiaji-Okuneye said.

She said that learning and education were very important with the current situation of the country, because more educated people help to preach peace and orderliness.

“Governments and national orientation agencies need to enlighten and educate people more on how to be safety conscious in order to protect themselves,” Lafiaji-Okuneye said.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, LASUED, Dr Adedayo Daodu, said that the major reason why students were admitted in schools was to educate and teach them what they did not know and how it could benefit them and the society.

Daodu said that the only way to change society was through education, with governments, parents, communities and others getting involved.

Director, Nigeria  Certificate in Education (NCE) Programmes, LASUED, Dr Tayo Kayode-Ishola, said that this was a first of its kind, in joining other institutions to celebrate education day.

Associate Professor of Microbiology, Kayode-Ishola, said that students of different colleges were involved because they needed to know that education is the best legacy to give to them.
