Women’s Day: Group urges women to be active in fight against cultism, other vices

The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices has urged women to actively participate in the fight against cultism, substance abuse and other vices.

The National Coordinator of the group, CSP Ebere Amaraizu, made the call on Monday, while speaking on the role of women in character formation in children.

Amaraizu spoke in an interview with newsmen in Enugu on this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration.

“We urge women to be actively involved in the ongoing campaign against the phenomenon because they are closer to children for value reorientation and self discovery.

He said that society understands women’s role in peace building and their ability to turn things around for greater benefit and progress.

Amaraizu said: “Women’s scope of opportunities should be widened for all inclusive participation in the scheme of things.

“Strict adherence to gender mainstreaming is vital as no one individual can do it alone.

“There is a need for their full and equal participation and leadership in all areas of sustainable development.

“We need to urgently work towards achieving goal Five on Gender Equality, otherwise known as Stand Alone, of the Sustainable Development Goals, thus empowering all women and girls’’.

Amaraizu also called on women groups to rise up against sexual and gender-based violence, sex-for-employment, sex-for-admission and marks and other forms of domestic and cultural violence against them.

“To our women, we expect them to live above board and never compromise their integrity or succumb to negative pressure to do things against their will,’’ he further said.

Reports state that IWD is set aside to celebrate the socio-economic, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide.
