Woman seeks help after partner’s brutal killing, threats to life over alleged LGBTQ+ identity
Isiwat Damilola Adesoye, a courageous woman, has urgently appealed for assistance after her life was placed in immediate jeopardy, ultimately resulting in the tragic murder of her partner, Wuraola Onafuwa. This distressing incident was a consequence of their LGBTQ+ identity, which was discovered by an enraged mob.
Isiwat and Wuraola had been living together as best friends in Lagos, while concealing their true romantic relationship, until their secret was tragically exposed and linked to their LGBTQ+ orientation. Fuelled by anger, a mob took matters into their own hands, leading to Wuraola’s brutal killing.
Isiwat’s journey began in her youth when her parents discovered her kissing another girl in their neighbourhood. This act was considered disgraceful by her parents, resulting in severe punishment and limitations placed on her educational opportunities due to their fear of further engagement in same-sex relationships tarnishing their family’s reputation.
In 2007, Isiwat entered into a relationship with Adenike Ogunjobi, and they opted to live together while disguising their true connection as sisters. Unfortunately, their peaceful existence was shattered when a group of men invaded their home, subjecting both women to sexual assault. This traumatic event left lasting scars and health complications, ultimately causing Adenike to end the relationship.
Isiwat’s life took another unforeseen turn when she discovered she was pregnant. In 2009, she gave birth to her daughter, Istijabah Omowunmi Adesoye. Despite the challenges she faced, Isiwat continued to pursue relationships and eventually found solace in her sisterhood-like bond with Wuraola Onafuwa, with whom she spent four years.
However, tragedy struck on the day Isiwat was scheduled to travel when Wuraola dropped her off at the airport, assuring her of a swift return. Heartbreakingly, Isiwat later discovered that Wuraola had been lynched by individuals who exposed her identity as a lesbian.
Now living in fear for her own life, Isiwat is in hiding, deeply apprehensive that she will be the next target if she returns to the country.
Isiwat’s poignant story highlights the immense challenges faced by individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in societies that lack acceptance and understanding. The grave consequences of their identities can lead to violence, discrimination, and, in the most tragic cases, loss of life.
As Isiwat seeks assistance and a place of safety, it is paramount for society to acknowledge the crucial importance of supporting and safeguarding vulnerable individuals who endure such perilous circumstances due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
