A horrific tragedy has shaken the town of Irele, headquarters of Irele Local Government Area in Ondo State, following the brutal killing of a young woman, known simply as Joy, allegedly by the son of her landlord.
The incident took place on Monday within the residential compound where both the suspect and the deceased resided. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the middle-aged man allegedly used a machete to inflict fatal wounds on Joy during a confrontation reportedly linked to undisclosed personal tensions.
Although official details are still being gathered, several residents claim the suspect may have carried out the attack after the woman reportedly declined his sexual advances.
The suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody at the Irele Divisional Police Headquarters. Authorities have commenced a full investigation into the matter.
Reacting to the killing, the Member representing Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. (Omo’ba) Okunjimi Odimayo, strongly denounced the act, describing it as “barbaric and heartbreaking.”
In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Victor Adedeji, Odimayo remarked: “This crime is a grave affront to our shared values as human beings. I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of Irele, particularly the bereaved family. I want to assure them that the law will take its full course. The perpetrator will not evade justice.”
The lawmaker disclosed that he had spoken with the Divisional Police Officer in Irele, who confirmed the swift arrest of the suspect. Odimayo commended the Nigeria Police for their prompt and professional handling of the situation.
He also urged the local community to remain calm and allow the judicial process to take its proper path.
“I strongly appeal to residents not to resort to any form of retaliation. The justice system will run its course, and accountability will be enforced,” he stated.
