Woman arraigned for stealing baby in Lagos hospital

A woman, Modinat Faniyi, was on Monday arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to steal a newborn baby in a Muslim hospital in the Ijaiye, Ojokoro area of Lagos State.

The 49-year-old was arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on one count of attempted theft.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendant entered the Ahmadiya Muslim Hospital at Ijaiye, Ojokoro, on June 22, 2023, and attempted to abscond with a newborn baby when the mother was asleep.

According to Nurudeen, the offence contravened and is punishable under Section 21 (5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Patrick Nwaka admitted her to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He also adjourned the case till September 1, 2023.
