Woman, 26, docked for allegedly stealing employer’s N968,000

A 26-year-old credit officer, Deborah Olaitan, who allegedly stole the sum of N968,000 kept in her care, was, on Monday, brought before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Olaitan, whose residential address was not provided, is standing trial on a count charge of stealing preferred against her by the police.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in November at Zakah Empowerment Initiative Centre, Governor Road, Ikotun, Lagos, where she was an officer.

Aigbokhan said that the defendant stole a cash sum of N980,000 left in her care and could not give reasonable explanations on what she used the money for.

He said that the offence contravened Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 287(7) provides seven years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of stealing from his/her employer.

The Magistrate, Miss K.A. Ariyo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payments to Lagos Government.

Ariyo, thereafter, adjourned the case till Jan. 10 for mention.
