Wike pledges aggressive revenue drive to complete FCT projects
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to intensify efforts in revenue collection to ensure the timely completion of ongoing projects across the capital.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday after inspecting various infrastructure developments set for inauguration in May—marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office—Wike stressed the need for a more assertive approach to tax collection.
The projects visited included the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, the access road and left-wing service lane from Apo roundabout to Wassa, and a 16-kilometre road connecting Idu to Dei Dei.
The minister emphasised that the FCT Administration (FCTA) would strictly enforce tax compliance while ensuring all measures remained within legal boundaries.
“We will be vigorous in driving revenue collection because it is the only way to achieve more and deliver meaningful projects,” he stated.
Addressing concerns over revoked Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), Wike dismissed criticisms, explaining that tax payments and land levies provide crucial funding for infrastructural development.
“When people complain about the revocation of C of Os, I find it amusing. Many don’t realise that it is through these payments and taxes that we can finance projects that directly impact their lives.
“This is not about politics; it is about responsibility and accountability. If the government allocates land to you, it is only fair to pay the required annual ground rent, which contributes to the development of the FCT,” he explained.
The minister urged residents to fulfil their tax obligations voluntarily, stressing that expanded development efforts across all parts of the FCT depend on increased revenue.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress of various projects, confirming that many would be completed in time for President Tinubu’s second anniversary celebrations.
“I am particularly impressed by the pace of work on the Idu-Dei Dei Road project. Initially awarded in 2014, this project will finally be completed in May,” he said.
He further noted that the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal was on track for completion by September, while the Apo-Wassa Road on the Outer Southern Expressway would also be finished in May.
“These projects are a direct reflection of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. FCT residents are witnessing a government that delivers on its promises,” Wike added.
