What UNILAG has recorded in 60 years -VC reveals

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola has revealed what the University of Lagos ( UNILAG) has achieved in 60 years of existence.

She said the University has recorded remarkable achievements nationally, internationally and the impact as a teaching and learning community has been felt across all spheres of human endeavour.

The V.C made this known during a Pre- Convocation press conference ahead of the 60th anniversary (53rd) convocation ceremonies, delivered on Tuesday, January 10th, 2023 at the senate chambers.

Still speaking on what the institution has recorded, she said, ” The technical support from our non-teaching staff, have excelled in teaching and research, promoting sports and culture development as well as innovation and entrepreneurship, Indeed, the strength of the University of Lagos system and structures built over these years have enabled each Vice-Chancellor to date to sustain the gains of previous administration while pushing out to find new frontiers in the aspiration to make our institution one of the global best.”

Also, It was revealed that a total of 2,251 graduating students will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates; out of this number, 67 will receive Postgraduate diplomas, 2,119 will receive Masters degrees while 65 will receive Doctorate degrees.

However, she revealed that the past year has been characterised by various challenges to tertiary institutions in Nigeria raising from the eight (8) months industrial strike action by employees of Nigeria’s public University system.

The overall best Ph.D. Thesis award for this year goes to YINUSA, Ahmed Amoo who obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering

The best Ph.D. Thesis in Humanities award goes to KIENKA, Rita Okorite who obtained her Ph.D. in Guidance and Counselling

In the address, ” The best Ph.D. Thesis in Science award goes to YINUSA, Ahmed Amoo who obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering

The oldest graduating student is (Male) DUYILE, Dayo Michael who obtained his Ph.D. in Mass Communication at the age of 83 years.

Incidentally, Duyile, Dayo Michael was the Daily Times of Nigeria journalist who covered the Opening Ceremony event of the University of Lagos on October 3, 1962.

The oldest graduating student is (Female) OKONJI, Bridget Obiageli who obtained her M.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling at the age of 82 years”
