Wanted IPOB members still at large — Police
Five months after the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) organised protests that brought the state to a standstill on September 18, 2023, with the police declaring many, including one Spencer Frederick Ugwu, wanted for their alleged involvement, they are still at large.
Spencer Frederick Ugwu, born in 1991 and raised in Enugu State, is one of the suspected IPOB members believed to have actively participated in the protests held in Opi, Nsukka. The demonstrations, aimed at drawing attention to the group’s cause, later escalated into a legal pursuit for those identified.
The police formally declared Ugwu and others wanted on September 20, 2023, as part of efforts to bring them to justice. The charges against the individuals include offenses related to the disruption of public order and involvement in activities deemed unlawful by the authorities.
The IPOB, advocating for the independence of Biafra, has been a source of tension in the region, with clashes between its members and security forces becoming increasingly common. The declaration of individuals involved in the September 18 protests as wanted signals a heightened crackdown on the group by law enforcement agencies.
While intense efforts are underway to apprehend the wanted individuals, five months later residents are still unable to provide any information that may lead to their arrest. The situation remains tense as authorities say they will not leave any stone unturned in addressing the aftermath of the protests and maintain public order in the State.
