Wall collapse claims life of labourer in Lagos
A tragic accident occurred in the Opebi area of Lagos State on Friday, resulting in the death of 45-year-old labourer Nwanneka Ogbonaya.
The incident, confirmed on Monday by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, involved a wall collapse at a construction site.
According to Hundeyin, the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. while Ogbonaya was working at the site where an old building was being demolished to facilitate the construction of a new structure.
“The blocks suddenly collapsed on him, leading to severe injuries and unconsciousness,” he stated.
Ogbonaya was immediately rushed to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead by the attending physician.
His elder brother reported the incident to the police, who have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Hundeyin noted, “Investigation into the case is still ongoing,” highlighting the need to examine safety measures in place at construction sites to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
This incident emphasises ongoing concerns regarding construction safety protocols in Lagos, as authorities continue to grapple with the implications of unsafe building practices.
