Vigilante group leader arrested for armed robbery in Rivers

A leader of vigilante group in Igwurita community of Ikwerre Local Government of Rivers has been arrested by the police over alleged involvement in armed robbery at a border town between the state and Imo State.

The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Samuel Wanosike, made the disclosure to Commissioner of Police during a stakeholders’ meeting on the activities of vigilante operatives in Rivers held in Port Harcourt last Thursday.

Mr Wanosike complained that the suspect was arrested for murder last year, but he was mysteriously released from police custody.

It is was gathered that the suspect was arrested last week Wednesday and is in custody of one of the Police tactical units in Port Harcourt.

But following the complain by the Local Government Chairman, CP Emeka inquired from members of of his management team in the meeting where the suspect was being kept.

However, the Rivers Police Commission did not make the information public at the meeting.

Wanosike pleaded with Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, to ensure that the suspect is charged to court.

The Local Government Chairman also told CP Emeka that the suspect also attacked Igwurita Police Division when he committed the murder.

Vigilantes operatives suspected to be members of feared OSPAC group had attacked Igwurita Police Division in 2020 and freed one of their leaders who was accused of murder.
