US approves $20bn arms deal with Israel, including 50 fighter jets, amid Middle East tensions
On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department announced its approval of a $20 billion arms sale to Israel. The deal, now communicated to Congress, includes a significant package of military equipment aimed at strengthening Israel’s defense capabilities.
According to AP, the approved sale features over 50 F-15 fighter jets, essential for maintaining Israel’s air superiority. It also includes Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) known for their advanced targeting and engagement, as well as 120 mm tank ammunition, high explosive mortars, and tactical vehicles.
This arms package arrives amid rising concerns about a potential broader regional conflict involving Israel. However, the delivery of the equipment is expected to take years, with the earliest systems projected to arrive around 2026.
The State Department emphasized that the sale supports U.S. national interests by strengthening Israel’s self-defense capabilities. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is navigating increased calls to limit military aid due to high civilian casualties in Gaza and has halted the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs in response.
The contracts will include not only the sale of 50 new F-15 aircraft from Boeing but also upgrade kits for Israel’s existing fleet of 24 F-15s, with enhancements including new engines and radars. The first deliveries of these upgraded jets are anticipated by 2029.
