The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, has emphasised the significance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to harness Nigeria’s vast maritime potential.
Speaking at the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the League of Maritime Editors, Oyetola stressed that the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy demonstrates the President’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria as a key global maritime player.
Oyetola, represented by Director, Maritime Services, Mr. Babatunde Sule, highlighted the sector’s potential to transform Nigeria’s economy, create jobs, and improve livelihoods.
He outlined the ministry’s strategies to reposition the sector, including improving port efficiency, enhancing infrastructure, boosting maritime security, and developing the workforce.
In a related development, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Barrister Pius Akutah, pledged to address the rejection of Nigerian agricultural produce by other countries.
He noted significant progress in automating port processes and operations, aligning with the Federal Government’s agenda for the marine and blue economy sector.
Akutah, represented by Director, Strategic Planning and Research, Rotimi Anifowose, highlighted measures taken by the council, including the establishment of Border Information Centres and the promotion of full digitalization of port processes.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasised the importance of revenue generation in customs administration, stressing the need for trade facilitation, stakeholder enlightenment, and advocacy programs to reduce smuggling and increase revenue collection.
The event underscored the collective efforts of stakeholders to unlock Nigeria’s maritime potential, drive economic growth, and enhance the country’s position in the global maritime industry.
