University Don hosts workshop to sensitise youths on employment opportunities in carbon literacy

The Dean, Faculty of Computer and Informatics, Ladoke Akintola University of technology (LAUTECH), Professor Justice Emuoyibofarhe has hosted a one day sensitization workshop to sensitive youths on employment opportunities in carbon literacy and green innovations.

The workshop which was organized the Mobile and ecomputing Research group, Faculty of Computer and Informatics Ladoke Akintola University of Science and technology is the first in the series of other workshops to be organized.

In his opening remarks, Professor Justice disclosed that the workshop is a research output that is being funded by the British Council through the IAU.

The IAU had earlier called for applications for a research Grant earlier in July 2021. LAUTECH emerged as one of the 24 winners of the grant alongside some other universities in Sub-saharan universities.

According to him, the British council made available funding to the tune of 60,000 pounds and boosted it later with another tranch of 60,000 pounds to enable the university reach more partners and develop solutions regarding climate problems peculiar to Africa.

“Previously, we had conducted workshops for students on Carbon literacy who will receive their certificates in today’s workshop.”

“We believe that we can solve the problems that come with Climate change and solve unemployment issues concurrently,” Professor Justice said.

Represented by the Director of Student Affairs, Professor Ige, the Acting-vice Chancellor of LAUTECH, Professsor Mojeed Liasu in his welcome address said, “Climate Change and Global warming is now with us and not just a threat. The core of this worskshop is aimed at sensitizing us on the endangering effects of global warming.”

“At a time like this in Nigeria where unemployment is on the rise and there is a downturn in the economy, this sensitization workshop is well overdue to help youths to identify opportunities and green innovations that can be leveraged to tackle the challenges posed by global warming thereby creating jobs.”

Delivering a speech on ‘Climate Change, Carbon Emission and Footprints in Nigeria’, Professor Abimbola Baale urged individuals to take up individual actions to reducing carbon emissions.

She noted that it is a global concern that requires individual, national and organizational efforts.
