As part of its efforts to reduce unemployment among the youth and promote entrepreneurship among her students, the management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has disbursed funds worth over Two Million Naira to 16 of her Alumni members.
The event tagged UNIOSUN Alumni Start-up scheme which was held in Osogbo had the Chief Whip of Osun state House Assembly, Hon Tunde Olatunji, Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Investment Promotion Agency, Hon. Femi Adeniran, representative of Jaiz Bank among other dignitaries in attendance.
Addressing the beneficiaries and Alumni members at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Labode Popoola said the Start-up scheme was initiated by the school management in their bid to ensure graduands from the school becomes employer of labour “and equally to complement the efforts of the government at reducing the unemployment rate in the country through the creation of start-ups funds for Alumni with bankable proposals in kick-starting their dream businesses and become employers of labour afterwards.”
Prof. Popoola said, “The vision of the University is to provide high-quality teaching and learning experience that will ensure the production of entrepreneurial graduates who are capable of impacting their environment and at the same time competing effectively and efficiently at the global stage.”
He further said the fund is a mustard seed which the University hope will shape the future of the beneficiaries for the better.
The Vice-chancellor equally implored members of the Alumni who are yet to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Start-up scheme to act fast and make better use of the window provided by the university as the projection for the first phase of the scheme is to support 50 members of the Alumni before activating another phase for the scheme.
Hon. Tunde Olatunji while speaking at the event highlighted the importance and the making of a Successful entrepreneur, advising the beneficiaries and others in attendance to imbibe the culture of entrepreneurship as it is the only panacea to reduction of unemployment in the country and wealth creation in our society.
Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Investment Promotion Agency, Hon. Femi Adeniran share insights on business branding and how the beneficiaries of the fund can ensure their products or the service they provide compete effectively in the competitive market space.
Adding to the business expository shared already by other guest speakers at the event, Mr Taofeek Mustapha, representative of Jaiz Bank at the event explained and tutored the beneficiaries on how to efficiently manage their income and expenditure as an entrepreneur and at the same time growing their business at a commendable pace.
The highlight of the event was when the 16 beneficiaries were presented with a cheque worth Two Hundred Thousand each (N200,000) in support of their businesses.
The Vice-chancellor promised the University would engage in constant follow-up with the beneficiaries and equally become their major customer for product or services any of them start providing from the funds they’ve gotten.
