UNIOSUN donates food items, others to widows, orphans

In commemoration of the 70th birthday of Dr Folorunsho Alakija, Chancellor, Osun State University (UNIOSUN), on Tuesday, distributed food items and provisions to widows and orphanage homes across the State.

The gesture, which is a token of love from the University, was in tandem with Dr Alakija’s passion for philanthropy.

To celebrate her birthday, the State University scheduled a three-day programme from July 13th to 15th, 2021.

It was learnt that the three-day programme includes distribution of food items and materials to 70 orphanage homes in the state and sports contest on Wednesday, book presentation on Wednesday as well as Fashion Show and Public Lecture on Thursday.

Some of the beneficiaries include: FOMWAN Orphanage, Osogbo; Women in Profession and Business Widows’ Wing, Osogbo, AnuOluwapo Widows and Children Initiatives: NASFAT Widows, Osogbo; The Lord’s Heritage Orphanage Home for the Physically Challenged and Orphans, Ede; Free the Child Orphanage Home, Grip of Salvation Mission, Ilesa among others.

The items distributed are bags of rice, cartons of noodles, packs of spaghetti, cartons of cowbell chocolate, cartons of cowbell milk, pieces of toothpaste, packs of toilet rolls, detergent, and Ankara clothing.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Professor Labode Popoola said since the celebrant became the chancellor of the university, she has been of immense value to the institution.

Describing her as a gift to humanity, Professor Popoola said, “She’s a woman who gives, not because she has, but because she is willing to give.

“We thought of doing something spectacular, which she loves doing by giving items to widows, individuals with special needs across Osun State as our token of appreciation and to celebrate Dr Folorunsho Alakija on her 70th birthday.”

The VC also charged well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the philanthropic attitude of Dr Alakija by donating gifts to the less privileged in the society.

In their separate remarks, the beneficiaries commended Osun State University for the initiative while appreciating Dr Folorunsho Alakija for her charitable activities in Nigeria.
