UNILORIN launches U-INSPIRE award, partners 21 organisations on skills acquisition

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has launched a new initiative called the Unilorin Innovative Skills and Pioneering Entrepreneurship (U-INSPIRE) Award, partnering with 21 organisations to expand skills acquisition opportunities for its students.

The announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, during the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday in Ilorin.

Prof. Egbewole explained that the U-INSPIRE program is designed as a new apprenticeship model that accommodates both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

“This initiative will expand students’ skills acquisition programme beyond the courses run by the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC),” he noted, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the program.

The Vice Chancellor emphasised the importance of practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge, stating, “The importance of skills acquisition in relation to theoretical knowledge is like the difference between learning how to drive a car in the classroom and getting on the road to learn.”

He encouraged students to actively engage in the programme to secure their future success.

The Chairman of the U-INSPIRE Committee, Prof. Rasheed Jimoh, added that the programme forges a crucial partnership between the university and the industry.

“U-INSPIRE bridges the skill gap to make graduates ready for the industry. It helps them to be innovative and become entrepreneurs through soft skill acquisition, internship, and entrepreneurship,” he explained.

Jimoh further emphasised that the programme would provide mentorship opportunities, equipping students with practical skills and exposure necessary to thrive in a competitive job market.

He also noted that the success of the U-INSPIRE initiative relies on ongoing support from all stakeholders involved.
