Unilag wins N0.5m DPR prize for basin evaluation competition

University of Lagos (Unilag) has emerged winner of a grand prize of N500,000, at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) “Basin Evaluation Competition for Students” competition as part of initiatives to compliment Federal Government’s exploratory efforts in the inland basins.

DPR played a critical role at the 37th edition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) Annual International Conference and Exhibition 2019 which took place in Lagos recently.

The competition featured a total of 29 Nigerian universities which eventually culminated in a closely contested finale featuring students from five renowned Universities; University of Lagos, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Crawford University Ogun State, Akwa Ibom State University and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Anambra State.

University of Nigeria Nsukka came second place with a cash prize of N300,000 and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University took the third place position and a cash prize of N200,000 only.

However, all student participants at the competition went home with a N10,000 stipend for participating in the competition.

The team of judges was drawn from professionals in the industry, with no affiliation or relationship to the participating universities. The prizes were presented to the winners and representatives of the Universities at the Awards night organized by executives of NAPE to wrap up the four days conference and exhibition.

The Management of DPR was commended for the gesture and presented with an award of recognition for sponsoring the student’s competition.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Evolving Strategies for a Sustainable Petroleum Business in a Prolonged Low and Fluctuating Oil Price Regime”.

In line with the theme, a variety of ideas and knowledge sharing perspectives from renowned scholars, industry professionals, facilitators and young professionals added value to a variety of ideas that will advance the sustainable growth of the Nigerian oil and gas sector.

As part of DPR’s strategy to deepen stakeholders knowledge about the activities of the Department in the Nigerian oil and gas industry at major oil and gas conferences and exhibitions, the DPR organized a presentation for students and young industry professionals at the DPR 56M² state of the art exhibition booth on the topic; “Overview of Hydrocarbon Exploration in Nigeria and Government’s Intervention in Inland Basin Prospecting”.

The presentation was delivered by one of the Department’s finest, Prince Ereshibe Ashong (a very passionate and renowned geologist) in the Basinal Assessment and Lease Administration (BALA) branch of the office of the Director. He received resounding applause from the young professionals and students on his presentation.

The DPR Exhibition team led by the Head Public Affairs, Mr. Paul Osu played host to the GMD NNPC Mr. Mele Kyari and the entire VIP delegation during a stopover at the DPR exhibition booth after the exhibition was declared open.

The delegation was updated on all the ongoing digitization efforts of the Department in line with Federal Government’s Ease of doing business policy and the Executive Order 001.

The delegation was further updated on the status of the Nigeria Gas Flare Commercialization Program (NGFCP) the National Production Monitoring System (NPMS) which has recently been upgraded to cover real time monitoring of petroleum products vessels imports and exports on a real time basis amongst other things.
