UNICEF distributes 1250 cholera protection kits to flood victims in Jigawa
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has delivered 1,250 cholera protection and sanitation kits to flood victims in Jigawa State.
The distribution took place at Tsakuwawa village in Miga Local Government Area, as part of UNICEF’s response to the recent flooding that affected 12 local government areas.
Malam Kamaladdin Ahmad, Deputy Director of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), announced the initiative, highlighting that the kits are specifically designated for those currently residing in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
“The kits will only be given to the affected flood victims who are currently staying in various IDP camps across the state,” he stated.
Ahmad emphasized that those staying with relatives or who have returned home would not receive these materials, as their living conditions are deemed better than those in camps.
UNICEF’s support includes 750 cartons of cholera prevention kits and 500 hygiene dignity kits, which are being distributed to targeted beneficiaries.
“Work has commenced in earnest,” Ahmad reported, detailing that assigned staff are visiting IDP camps to ensure delivery of the kits.
According to records from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), IDP camps are located in 18 local government areas, and efforts will be made to visit all sites.
Each kit contains essential items, including 36 tablets of soap, sanitary pads, water treatment materials, and various household sanitation supplies to promote personal and environmental hygiene.
