UNICAL open to taxation programme – VC

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has disclosed that the institution was open to the idea of introducing an academic programme on taxation.

Obi disclosed this while responding to a request made by some officials of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) who paid her a courtesy call on Thursday in Calabar.

The VC urged the CITN to work out a proposal that would set the machinery in motion for the introduction of the programme in the institution.

She also said that the introduction of the programme would further expand the robust and rich curriculum offerings of the institution.

She added the programme would also increase number of tax practitioners as well as place the institution among those offering taxation as a degree programme in the country.

Obi, who said her administration was always open to partnerships, commended the institute for organising the tax week programme in Calabar.

She said that the programme would avail tax payers opportunity to bare their minds on challenges bedevilling them.

Earlier, the President of CITN, Mr Adesina Adebayo, congratulated the Vice Chancellor on her emergence as the first female Vice Chancellor of the university, saying he was optimistic that her administration would do massive exploits.

Adebayo, who was represented by the Vice President of CITN, Mr Samuel Agbeluyi, said that CITN would provide needed support required to make the programme viable.

Adebayo also appealed to the Vice Chancellor to encourage the formation of Taxation Students Association in the institution to raise consciousness on the existence of institute.

He further appealed that students and staff of the institution be encouraged to register and sit for the institute’s professional examination.

He said there were provisions for undergraduates and holders of professional qualifications from relevant professional bodies in the CITN.
