UBEC trains 100 school leaders in Kaduna to boost education quality

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) commenced a four-day training program on Monday for over 100 school leaders in Kaduna, focusing on effective leadership and governance in education.

The participants include Head Teachers, Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) Education Secretaries, and Principals.

Organised in partnership with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the state’s Teachers Service Board (TSB), the training is facilitated by JEBI Educational Services Ltd. Tijjani Abdullahi, Chairman of SUBEB, emphasised the initiative’s importance in enhancing the quality of education across the state.

“This significant step aims to equip school administrators with the skills necessary to manage their institutions efficiently and expose them to international best practices,” said Abdullahi, who was represented by Ahmad Sani, SUBEB’s Director of Human Resources.

He highlighted the pivotal role of effective leadership in shaping the education sector and achieving academic excellence, ensuring students receive quality education.

The training will cover key areas such as strategic planning, financial management, and community engagement, utilising interactive sessions, group discussions, and case studies led by resource persons from UBEC and other reputable institutions.

As part of the celebrations for the 2024 World Teachers’ Day, Abdullahi noted that the training also includes educational managers and policymakers to facilitate better conversations around leadership.

“We expect the participants to become not only school managers but also instructional leaders who will improve learning outcomes and the overall education status of the state,” he stated.

The training will encompass seven thematic areas, including instructional components, school infrastructure management, gender inclusion, disability inclusion, and financial management.

Inuwa Bahago from JEBI Educational Services Ltd remarked on the transformative power of effective leadership in education, stating that this training is a crucial investment in the future of the state’s educational system.

He urged the government to prioritise teachers’ welfare through competitive salaries, timely payments, and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Bahago also stressed the importance of creating safe and conducive working environments, recognizing outstanding teaching practices, and encouraging collaboration among teachers and school leaders to drive improvement.

Trainees, including Thendogara Audu and Mrs. Joy Simon, Education Secretaries for Jema’a and Kajuru LGAs respectively, expressed gratitude to UBEC and pledged to apply their newly acquired skills to enhance education delivery in their local government areas.
