Two men in court over alleged possession of firearms

Police arraigned two men, Afeez Mustapha (40) and Popoola Musibau (59) on Tuesday  before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly being in possession of illegal firearms.

The defendants, whose addresses were not disclosed in court, are facing a charge of being in possession of firearms.

The prosecutor, Insp. Caleb Leramo, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Jan. 26 at about 1800 hours (6.00 p.m.) in Ijero-Ekiti.

Leramo alleged that the defendants had in their possessions: four-pump-action guns, three-long- locally-made barrel guns, two-cut-to-small-size barrel guns and seven-live-cartridge bullets.

He said that the offence contravened Section 27(b) i & ii of the Firearms Act LFN, 2004.

The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.

The counsel to the defendants, Miss Tolulope Olasunkanmi, urged the court to grant them bail with a promise that they would not jump bail.

Chief Magistrate Saka Afunso granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

He adjourned the case until March 7 for hearing.
