Two female secondary school leavers in Abia have emerged winners of the scholarship for the 2022/2023 Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) examinations.
Chairperson, Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN), Mrs Ogechukwu Onyeonoro, presented the awards to the beneficiaries, Miss Nmesomachi Alugwe and Miss Gift Onwukwe at a brief ceremony, held in Umuahia on Sunday.
Report had it that the scholarship, known as ICAN-Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) Scholarship Award, is sponsored by SWAN, Umuahia chapter, the women’s wing of ICAN.
Onyeonoro said that the scholarship was initiated to assist indigent and brilliant female secondary school leavers with bias for accounting.
“This is to fulfill my promise during my investiture as the pioneer chairperson of SWAN in Umuahia.
“I promised at that ceremony that my leadership would give ATS scholarship to two indigent and brilliant female secondary school leavers in Umuahia,” she said.
The Chairperson said that the two girls emerged through a transparent process that included written examination and oral interviews.
According to her, the scholarship entails enrolling the beneficiaries for tutorials and paying their fees for the three stages of ICAN examinations from March 2022 to March 2023.
“I urge you to be diligent and focus on your studies so that you can excel in the examinations and move to the professional level in the shortest time possible,” she said.
Onyeonoro advised beneficiaries not to take the opportunity for granted, as there were many other persons looking for such kind of intervention.
She urged parents of the beneficiaries to give them the necessary moral support and encouragement during the examinations and probation.
“We seek collaboration from individuals, corporate bodies and governments to encourage the giants in us to rise.
“Such collaboration will enable us to extend the scholarship to other school leavers to pursue their career dream in accounting,” Onyeonoro said.
The beneficiaries thanked the association for remembering the indigent persons in the society.
The report had it that the Government House Medical Officer, Dr Ifeyinwa Uma-Kalu, presented a health talk on “Stress Management among Women”
Uma-Kalu advised women to reduce their daily workload, relax, engage in regular physical exercise, ensure periodic medical checks and entrust their worries to God in order to check stress.
