Two brothers docked for allegedly assaulting police officer

Two brothers, Ayobami, 23, and Ayomide Adebayo, 22, who allegedly assaulted a police officer on duty, were on Tuesday docked in an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The Adebayo brothers pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, assault, driving without a licence and manner likely to cause breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Insp Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on July 24, at the Zion bus stop, Ipaja, Lagos.

He said the brothers conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by preventing a police officer on duty from performing his lawful duty.

He said that Ayobami grabbed Insp Thomas Adelekun by his shirt and slapped while the officer was performing his duty.

The prosecutor also said that the other defendant, Ayomide, drove an unregistered Mercedes Benz car without a driver’s licence.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 168(1), 174, 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and Section 1 of the Road Traffic Laws and Regulations of Lagos State, 2018.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. K. Dosunmu, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

She ordered that the surety must be a blood relative of the defendant and must show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until August 29 for mention.
