Two arraigned over alleged theft of items worth N360,000
Two men, Usman Garba and Yusuf Abubakar, who allegedly broke into a man’s house to steal cash and property worth N360,000, were arraigned on Wednesday in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Mr Garba, 25, and Abubakar, 28, both residents in Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, are facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on January 6 at Ungwan Sarki Kaduna.
According to Mr Leo, the defendants conspired with two others at large to steal a cash sum of N100,000, jewellery, shirts, shoes and a generator all valued at N360,000 belonging to one Haruna Mohammed.
The defendants and their accomplices used a sharp object to gain entrance into the house while the complainant had gone to work.
“The defendants and his accomplices were caught by the complainant’s neighbour, who saw them coming out with the stolen items belonging to the complainant.
“She raised an alarm and the people in the compound came out and apprehended the defendants while the other two escaped,” he added.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 322 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted them to bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties in like sum.
Mr Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be residents of Kaduna State, gainfully employed and be able to furnish the court with their means of livelihood.
He also stated that the sureties must show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until February 8, for hearing.
