Tragedy on Kara Bridge as police officer dies in multiple-vehicle crash

Tragedy struck on Thursday morning as a police officer attached to the Mopol 20 Division in Lagos State was killed during a multiple-vehicle crash on Kara Bridge along the Berger area of the state.

The accident involved a goods-laden Volvo truck, a Toyota HiAce bus, and a Mercedes Benz bus.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the incident occurred at approximately 6:44 a.m. when the truck, with registration number FKJ 484 YA, collided with the moving Mercedes Benz bus.

The truck swerved off the road and overturned, falling on the Toyota HiAce bus that was parked by the roadside.

LASEMA’s Response Team swiftly arrived at the scene following distress calls made to its 767/112 toll-free emergency number.

Upon arrival, they discovered the scene to be chaotic, with the truck precariously resting on the HiAce bus and the Mercedes Benz bus also involved in the wreck.

A police officer riding a motorcycle was trapped by the accident and died instantly.

Sources revealed that the officer, while returning to his base, was caught in the crash and could not escape in time.

In a statement, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the police officer’s death, noting that his body had been recovered and transferred to the Ojodu police station for further processing.

“The accident left the officer fatally trapped, and despite the quick intervention of the LASEMA team, he was declared dead at the scene,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, while the vehicles involved have been cleared from the road to allow for smooth traffic flow.
