Tinubu approves upgrade of Maiduguri Airport
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for the upgrade of Maiduguri Airport, a move that is set to enhance air travel infrastructure in the region.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Sunday Dare, made the announcement via his X handle, @SundayDareSD, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the nation’s aviation sector.
This decision is anticipated to bring significant economic benefits and improve regional connectivity, facilitating trade and business growth. Additionally, the federal government is taking steps to clamp down on illegal charter operations across the country to ensure compliance with aviation regulations and enhance safety.
In a related development, the Minister also announced the official launch of the African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU) in Abuja. This specialised institution is dedicated to advancing research and training in aviation and aerospace, with the goal of nurturing a new generation of skilled professionals to drive the industry forward.
He expressed optimism about the university’s impact, stating that investing in human capital was essential for Nigeria’s aviation sector to thrive. Furthermore, he highlighted efforts to strengthen the local aviation sector, including initiatives to support indigenous operators and establish strategic partnerships.
The Minister also revealed that Nigeria’s Federal Government is actively addressing concerns regarding the backlog of unpaid dues owed to international airlines. He cited recent government initiatives aimed at clearing these debts and restoring confidence in the aviation sector.
As part of the government’s broader strategy, measures are being introduced to clamp down on unauthorised charter operations. Travellers are being urged to ensure they board only licensed aircraft, as new regulations will hold both passengers and operators accountable for compliance.
With these initiatives, the government aims to not only improve the aviation sector’s credibility but also create an environment that fosters investment, enhances safety standards, and ensures a more efficient and regulated industry.
