Thespian, Daniel Okezue, clinches lead role in Scrilla, UK

Playwright and thespian, Daniel Okezue, has clinched a lead role in the upcoming UK stage production Scrilla, set to premiere on 24 July 2024 at The Bradford Playhouse.

Okezue will portray DCI Mason in what is described as “an exciting story with a twist, exploring the complexities of mixing business with pleasure, the things we do for love, and the lengths we might go to for money.” The role aligns with his ongoing theatrical experiments, blending classic themes with contemporary settings.

Speaking to our correspondent, Okezue said, “I look forward to bringing to life Mason’s worrisome, yet hilarious flaws to the audience. That way a mirror is held up to the world. Like see yourself, please change, you know? Even while they laugh.

“Consider Anna Deavere Smith saying that ‘Everyone has literature inside of them.’ I believe in the audience’s intelligence, beyond the pleasure of viewing, to cull lessons,” The Prolific MC, as he is known in many creative circles, said.

The play follows DCI Maggie, who is tasked with dismantling a deadly drug operation alongside her partner, Mason. However, every piece of evidence she uncovers appears to be sabotaged, raising pressing questions: who is responsible, and why?

Okezue first gained attention in 2014 when his creative team emerged top ten of Farouz’s L’Original competition. Since then, he has pursued a diverse range of artistic projects, including last year’s reprise of his role in Butterflies III.

His acting portfolio includes LAGOSA, where he starred alongside Femi Jacobs, Dakore Egbuson-Akande, and Olu Jacobs. He also appeared in The Polygamist (with CreativeX) and featured in the Love and Light Festival advert by the renowned Street Church, known for its innovative use of Pidgin English to engage underserved communities. As Mazi Obiora, he captivated audiences in 2019’s The CONFAB.

His latest role in Scrilla marks an exciting new chapter in his career.
