Members of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non Academic Staff Union( NASU), University of Port Harcourt( UNIPORT) Chapter have vowed to proceed with their proposed indefinite strike, come midnight of Friday 5/2/2021 if nothing is done by the Federal Government (FG)to thwart it.

The Chairman of SSANU, University of Port Harcourt, Comrade Bernard Chukwu stated this Thursday in an exclusive interview with Nigerian NewsDirect in Port Harcourt.

According to him, there is nothing stopping them from proceeding on the strike.

“We have just finished our Congress/Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting and resolved that if nothing is done between now and 12 midnight on Friday,5/2/2021 our members, that is non-teaching staff of UNIPORT, comprising members of Joint Action Committee, that is SSANU and NASU will embark on an indefinite strike. The industrial action will be total. You know that about two weeks ago we embarked on a protest march to draw the attention of the federal government over our grievances and we warned that if nothing is done to address the issues, we shall shutdown the university system. So there is no going back to that resolution,” Chukwu said.

The attempt by the FG to constitute a committee to negotiate with us is just a way to buy time. Committees don’t work, so we are shutting down the system, come midnight on Friday.

The trade unions are protesting the haphazard implementation of Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), Earned Allowance, minimum wage, among others.
