Knocks have continued to trail Federal Ministry of Education directive on closure of Government Colleges (FGCs) located in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and call for immediate evacuation of students over terrorist threats.
It was gathered that the decision was as a result of rising insecurity and threat to the lives, security and well-being of the students therein.
While some schools were asked to vacate on Wednesday, some other schools disseminated messages to parents on Sunday asking them not to fail to come pick their children on Monday, unfailingly, perhaps, due to rising fear, anxiety and threat.
Recall that recent reports trended on social media indicating that there were heavy shootings in Federal Government Colleges (FGCs) Kwali, Abuja, and parents were rushing to the school to ascertain the safety of their children and possibly return home with them until calm is restored.
A senior staff at Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC), Bwari, Abuja, who pleaded anonymity said the directive they received from the Federal Ministry of Education was that students should vacate the school before Wednesday, and that no student should be found in the school by Wednesday.
Similarly, a parent whose son is in JSS 3 in Federal Government Boys’ College, Apo, Abuja, confirmed that the school is shutting down on Monday as against the date in the calendar and parents have been asked to come pick their children on Monday unfailingly.
He said, “My son told me that they were rushed to finish their examination, that they wrote four subjects everyday which, to me, was too much for the brains of these children.
“I also learnt that Federal Government Technical College, Orozo, Abuja, sent children packing since on Friday last week, immediately they rushed them to finish the examination as against the calendar. This is abnormal, and it’s an indication or points to the fact that there’s a threat, and it’s wise for the schools to release the children back to their parents.”
Reacting to the development on Monday, during a visit to Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) headquarters in Abuja, the Presidential candidate of Social Democratic Party, Prince Olawale Adebayo said President Muhammadu Buhari should resign if he cannot secure Nigerians.
He insisted that the federal government’s institutions and other important establishments such as Hospitals, Airports and Schools cannot shut down because of Criminal bandits.
According to him, “It is a major responsibility of the government to prevent kidnapping and insecurity. But before our schools were shut down, the first thing that was shutdown is the presidency.
“The Presidency has been shut down for the past Seven Years. If we are not careful, the government will be a bandit and the bandit will be the government. We need to be serious and do the work of securing Nigeria. We need the president to protect us and be a Commander in Chief.
“You can’t do law enforcement with the government, the Commander-in-Chief must wake up, same with his service Chiefs.
“The bandits are just lousy people that the government can deal with, but we must have a capable government first. If they (Bandits) say they want to attack hospitals, banks, airports and other establishments, would these institutions be shut down? Do the job or resign if you can’t,” he stated.
