Teach your children resources management – Group

A group, the Indomitable Youth Organisation (IYO) on Tuesday advised parents to instill resources management in their children to be socially and economically responsible.

Dr Bright Oniovokukor, the Project Director of IYO gave the advice in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of the 2021 Global Money Week in Benin.

The theme of the week is: “Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Your Money”.

Oniovokukor said that children and young people should be educated to be socially and economically responsible.

He said that teaching young people resources management would create a generation of capable adults, who could make wise decisions for their future.

“Children should be trained to understand the difference between ‘NEED’ and ‘WANT’.

“Some of the things they would ‘want’ would destroy them compared to what they ‘need’, adding that many of the wants would eventually be wasted.

“Children and young people should be made to learn how to question themselves: Does my body “NEED” this thing?

“What value will it add to me? The answers to these simple questions can serve as guiding principles preventing them from destroying their body as well as wasting resources.”

Oniovokukor advised parents and guardians to inculcate hardworking in their children.

“One responsibility of the parent and guardian to children is to make provision for them.

“However, we have seen children growing and not understanding that for the parents to make these provisions, they need to work hard.

“Ideally, children are supposed to know and understand how the parents come about the resources they use in taking care of them.

“This will go a long way to stimulate them positively and give them a sense of value.

“Children are also supposed to see and understand the process through which resources are made and how it should be properly utilised to avoid wastages,’’ the project director said.

Reports state that the 2021 GMW is holding from March 22 to March 28.
