TCN embarks on upgrade of Agbara 132/33kV transmission substation

…Upgrades Agbara 132/33kV transmission substation to boost power supply

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the restoration of full bulk power supply to Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies, allowing for uninterrupted distribution to consumers in Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, confirmed the development, attributing it to the successful repair of a section of the 330kV transmission line between towers 420 and 422 of the Osogbo-Omotosho line. The repair work was completed at 8:55 p.m. on Saturday, 15th March 2025.

The rectification of the snapped transmission line has reinstated lost power transmission and eliminated the load-shedding issues caused by the fault.

“We appreciate the patience and support of the Lagos State Government, Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies, and electricity consumers during this period of load management,” Mbah stated.

TCN has also commenced an upgrade of its power infrastructure at the Agbara 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Ogun State, under the Lagos region. This project involves replacing the existing 2x45MVA transformers with 2x100MVA units, a move aimed at increasing the substation’s capacity to meet the rising electricity demand in Agbara and its neighbouring areas.

The Agbara Industrial Zone, home to numerous manufacturing and industrial firms, relies on a stable power supply to sustain production. By expanding transformer capacity, the upgrade will enable Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to distribute more electricity to both businesses and residential areas.

To ensure minimal disruption, TCN has adopted a phased approach: Phase One: One 45MVA transformer will be replaced with a 100MVA unit, while the second 45MVA transformer remains operational to limit load shedding.

Once the first 100MVA transformer is activated, the second 45MVA transformer will be upgraded, increasing the substation’s total capacity from 150MVA to 260MVA.

While some areas relying on the Agbara 132/33kV Transmission Substation may experience temporary load shedding during the upgrade, TCN has reassured consumers that every effort is being made to minimise service disruptions and restore full supply promptly.

“We appeal to electricity consumers in the Agbara area for their understanding and cooperation during this upgrade process. We assure you that normal electricity supply will resume as soon as the upgrade is completed,” the statement concluded.
